lyrics

I just got back from Wembley, saw the wonderful Ed,
I've got “Lego House”, stuck in my head
Got me to thinking, how he turned it all around
Maybe I could make it good?
He made it cool to be ginger, that pasty-faced boy songwriter-singer
I wish I could do the same for others
I could maybe make it good for ageing single Mothers

We may not have much money, or time or anything, but that's cool,
I may be driving back from Wembley, with the kids in the back, praying I don't fall asleep or run out of fuel
So I write this song in my head, and I'm singing it with Ed
And there's a moment when our harmonies are sweet
There's a light in my heart and the world at my feet
Then I have to pull over to services for coffee 'cos I can't stop yawning,
And the kids have got school in the morning
I'm an ageing single Mother

I'm not sofa-surfing, or living out of a rucksack
I think social services would have something to say about that
I'd like to be more rock and roll but I don't have the time
I've got a bus fare and PE kit to find

I'm an ageing single Mother

We should have marches and concerts and pride
And back-stage passes to a sunnier side
I think of Ed and I think of my guitar
And how I'm nobody's hero outside of this car
Driving back through my neighbourhood
I see the kids in back and think “I'm already making it good”

I'm an ageing single Mother, trying to make it good, I'm an ageing single Mother

The next day I tell the kids about this song, How I was singing it at Wembley, and Ed was singing along
They say “Mum, you're so embarrassing, you'll never be that cool,
You can drop me off at the corner, I'll walk my own way to school”
I say “Don't slam...” (slam) “..the door”
They say “Sorry, love you, bye”, and turn to look at me with a look in their eye that says
“Hey Mum, you know I really love you” and the look I return says “You're going to make it too”
I'm an ageing single Mother trying to make it good
I'm an ageing single Mother, making it good
